They told the soldiers they were going to the next village to attend church. “Why don’t you go to the church in your own village?” “What’s so special about that church?” “Are you sure you aren’t trying to run away?” “How much money do you have?” It was difficult to remain composed with all those questions thrown at them but the slightest slip would alert the soldiers and all would be lost. With their hearts in their throats and their knees shaking they answered, “How could we run away, we have but a few rubles between us. How far would we be able to run with that? We just want to join the pilgrimage to the neighboring village.” The soldiers laughed mockingly them and told them to pray for them too. told to meet.
